About
Biography
I am an Associate Professor in Geo-analytics in the Department of Geology, Environment & Sustainability at Hofstra University (New York) and an Adjunct Associate Professor of Business at Rider University’s Norm Brodsky College of Business, where I teach in the Business Honors Program.
My research develops data analytics, artificial intelligence, and computational methods that draw knowledge out of complex spatial and temporal data. The methods come first, and the applications follow: floods and groundwater, earthquakes and ground movement, volcanic activity, climate and solar signals, biomedical signals, and business analytics.
In 2017 I designed and built the department’s advanced GIS laboratory and its Computer Big Data Laboratory, and both have been in continuous use since. The work there separates long-term, seasonal, and short-term components in very noisy records, using decomposition of time series, Kolmogorov-Zurbenko filtering, and wavelet and spectral analysis, and it forecasts and classifies with artificial neural networks and random forests. The records come from continuous monitoring stations, from geodetic (GNSS, GPS) sensors, and from remote sensing: LiDAR, drone thermal and optical scanning, and InSAR.
Sustainability and the environment run through most of this work: water quality in Hempstead Bay and in New York City harbors, nitrate and contamination signals in Long Island groundwater, flood risk and shoreline change on Fire Island and in the Rockaways, urban flood reconstruction in New York City, particulate contaminants in snowfall and airborne particulate matter during extreme dust events, sinkholes and landslides, and sustainable tourism and farming beside active volcanoes. With students I keep a volcanic monitoring network running on the Hellenic Volcanic Arc at Santorini, Nisyros, and Sousaki, where surface temperature sensors and drone thermal scanning are combined with methods that separate the atmospheric effect from the volcanic signal.
I like to keep part of my research projects close to students’ level of study, bringing students into team projects with enthusiasm and encouraging them to develop their own ideas. High school researchers, undergraduate and graduate students, and the NSF-funded GEOTeams program work with me on real data and present the results at conferences. The same data skills are set out step by step in my book R for Earth and Sustainability Data Analytics, written with Dr. Katerina Tsakiri.
