Our approach

Between us we have spent many years teaching R to students in Earth science, sustainability, and business, including many who arrived with no coding experience at all, from high schoolers to graduate researchers. That experience taught us how to introduce R to true beginners: keep it hands-on, show real results early, and build confidence before theory. This book is the result. It is written to break the ice of coding for people who never thought they could code. The style may not be what experienced R users expect, but for beginners it is very effective.

A guiding belief runs through all of it: students do not struggle with complexity, they struggle with abstraction. The real skill is learning to describe a problem clearly and solve it with a simple approach, instead of reaching for a complicated model. With the right approach, anyone can learn to think analytically, work with real data, and contribute to research, regardless of where they start.
